The time has finally come when we've to enrol XY for Primary school. We've not decided on Kebangsaan or Chinese school yet. And there isn't much time to dilly dally as we've to register by March. Here are the reasons why we chose a particular school :
Kebangsaan school
* I'm worried I'm not able to guide her in her homework/studies as I don't read nor write Chinese. And we don't intend to send her for tuition classes (at least not in early Primary years). PaPa is Chinese literate but can't possibly wait for him to come back from work to coach her, right?
* She can still learn Chinese by sending her for extra Chinese classes. But we'll need more effort in our part to create an environment for her to learn Chinese at home, in terms of reading and writing.
* Worried that she'll have to spend an extra year in Remove Class.
* Her English is much better than Mandarin at the moment. She speaks mainly English at home. Am a bit worried she won't be able to adapt or find it hard to catch up. But I guess this point is not too significant as we can prepare her now by sending her for Chinese lessons.
Chinese school
* She'd have a good base in Chinese after 6 years of formal education.
* The culture is a little different. The students are more disciplined and exposed to Chinese cultures. (I wonder if it's true or it depends on the particular school.)
* I think her English standard can be maintained as I'll be speaking English with her at home.
* Even non-Chinese are sending their children to Chinese schools, so why aren't we? LOL

I heard from a few ppl that the "remove class" has been abolished in M'sia. Is that true?
I have chosen Chinese school becoz I have firsthand experience how u lose out if u don't know Mandarin in the business/financial world. I will let him try, for 6 yrs of primary ed. I may change him to non-chinese sch when he reaches secondary ed, depending on his perf. Juana
ya, remove class is gone.hooray! we r planning to send Ian to chinese school so that he can read chinise. go karaoke oso can sing chinese songs ler unlike me and hubby. my cousins went to chinese school for 6 yrs and they used to speak fully eng at home. my aunt once scolded me and told me to speak eng with my cousins when they were young when i happened to speak cantonese. so now they r both gd in both languages and even excelled in their studies too. my bro speaks chinese at home and went to chinese school so his eng was quite bad. i think tuition oso can kua. my cousins said their parents didnt need to help them with chinese but of course a parent who can read chinese is better than none like hubby and I. so me oso worried and it also depends on the child too..
i always believe chinese school can provide more discipline environment to students. since you still speak english to your kids, then maybe you really can think of sending them to chinese school.
If you think your child can cope, then I think Chinese school would be a better choice. But if you think he can't (well, some kids are more intelligent, some are not, right?), then you'll probably need to evaluate if the competition & pressure will do him any harm, I guess.
I find chinese schools kids generally very much disciplined but shy (but this was years ago) as I did my form 6 in a chinese school and as I came from malay/english medium, my chinese was quite poor. Didn't have many friends till I pick up more chinese..
hmm...i'm also like u, undecided.....but i'd definitely prefer chinese medium
go for chinese school... I'm from chinese background and I realized chinese school provide a very good foundation in young age learning and tougher as competition is greater. There's alot of chinese tradition values and cultures which is still advisable to learn and practise in our life. I found out that the process of learning in chinese school is valueable and become the base for my new knowledge that I pick up later, some are much more easier. Plus, you won't regret of knowing more language in term of read and write.
Both myself n hubby is ABC :D but we are sending Brian to chinese school.Reason why is since both of us don't know chinese but we wan our kids know juz like what Wen said go karaoke also can sing.
I vote for chinese school too. My eldest is in chinese school now. Both my parents don't know Chinese but they sent me to a chinese school which I gain a lot. Many still think I'm Eng.educated when they hear me speak or see me write. So,your children will be tri-lingual if they learn 6 years of chinese. Besides that, I find the culture and environment very different from kebangsaan school where the children's mentality will be different too. With China coming up, Chinese becomes very important when they search for a job next time.
slavemum, I am non chinese (only 25% chinese blood+50%malay+25%others) but I'm sending them to CHinese kindy this March, which happen they the only Malay there as we think Chinese language is important in future and a same time it's good for them to learn more language.currently, there speak English and sometime malay at home. beside learn new culture. I want my kids to be multilingual (but not forcing them la)
hmm this is a tough one. my bro-in-law is chinese educated (he's half-chinese), but the main reason he and my sister decided to send their kids to kebangsaan is because my BIL won't have time to tutor the kids with their chinese lessons. but some of our nephews and nieces are in chinese school and they're doing fine because most of them are being sent to extra class.
both schools have their own pros and cons and i guess the truth is u can't win em all! right now my nephew's about to take UPSR and he's in the top class so he's very disciplined and doing very well. i guess wherever u send them, the most important thing is our upbringing with them...? they can be good in both types of schools.
i'll always choose chinese primary as hubby and i both know mandarin. we do think that mandarin is very important as local businesses has oredi extended to China. look into the future, it's better to know more languages! ....when they reach secondary, there'll be very less mandarin...
i'm also chinese illiterate like you and i can't possibly rely on my huby to teach/guide them in their home work (he lacks d patience too) and yet we decided to go for chinese medium school....
i really don't know out of what makes me think that it would be better but i'm still worry sick that my boys can't cope!
my thoughts would be to only worry when the problems come.. lets take thing a step at a time as for now i don't wana give it a thought yet!
i think should be chinese school, they will learn more at the chinese school, and I heard that the chinese school teacher will be mre hardworking and the home works of the student also a lot.For me, I also plan to sent wilson to chinese school.
