Toilet Training In Progress

And it's going quite well. Since last week, I tried on and off (usually in the evening, after his afternoon nap) to see if he's ready to be diaperless when he's not sleeping. At the beginning, it seemed that he wasn't quite ready.

He likes to flush the toilet so every time he pees into the toilet bowl or potty, I'll let him flush it himself. And if he's wet his pants, then only continue to pee in the toilet, he doesn't get to flush. Errr... flushing as rewards? Well, as long as it works! LOL

Yesterday, I tried since morning (after his bath), except when he's napping of coz. I'll bring him to the toilet or let him pee into the potty every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how much water he's taken. Surprisingly, he didn't wet himself the whole day. And he did something which made me very proud. (hehehe... it's very normal that mothers are proud of their kids' tiniest achievements, right?) This was what happened. SIL and CH came over for lunch so I left CE and Kakak at home while I went out to fetch XY back from kindy. While I was out, CE went to take the potty. And when Kakak asked him if he wants to 'shee shee', he tugged at his pants. So he peed successfully into the potty. Well, not sure if it was just coincidence coz I didn't witness him taking the potty himself again after that.

But before I could jump for joy, he wet the sofa just now after dinner. And less than 15 minutes later, he wet the floor. :-| And he almost wet the floor again and made it 3 accidents in a row. He was squatting down playing with something when he noticed that he's started to pee. (hehehe... he was half naked coz I was too lazy to get a clean pants for him.) He made some noise and pointed to the two drops of urine on the floor. I quickly asked him to stop, brought him to the potty and he continued to pee there. Does that mean he's able to control his bladder? Anyway, I'll continue and see his progress for the next few days. This weekend's mission (if we go out) - shop for training pants.

Hi Ginnie. What I'm going to say may not sound so nice but I think I'll say what I think and leave it for you to decide.

When I toilet trained Karl, I did exactly like you, bringing him to pee every 15 minutes of so. Then, I realized that I did something very wrong because by bringing him every now and then made him very dependent on me. If I don't bring him, he will wet his pants. He didn't know how to tell or should I say he thought when it's time to pee, mummy will bring me. I don't have to tell.

When it's Wayne's turn, I told him that he should tell if he wants to pee and I didn't bring him to the toilet unless he told me. I let him wet his pants and asked whether he liked the feeling of wearing a wet pants. He didn't. So, I told him that if he didn't like the feeling, then, he should tell. He was toilet trained faster than Karl. Off course, this would mean cleaning up the mess during the period of toilet training but I think it's worth the effort.

I did the same for Nyn and she too was toilet trained faster.

That was my experience and it's ok if you disagree. Everyone has his or her own way and you should do whatever you think is best for you and your children.

There's bound to be lots of accidents at the initial stage. After a while, as the child gets used to controlling his bladder, the accidents will reduce. When he's a little grown up (usually by 4 yo), he can even hold his pee longer.

no worry, same thing happens here... en en purposely doesn't want to tell us when she wants to pee and she will pee right after getting up from potty or coming out from toilet. She will tell us "mei you" (no shh... shh...) when she's in the toilet or sitting on potty. She wets not only floor but carpet too. But sometimes she did very well, especially before bath, she will pee when ask to. DH also punish her cannot go out with us if she refuse to pee... He said this is part of disciplin... cruel horr...

Hui Sia, I'm actually quite happy with his progress coz I wasn't really putting vy hi hopes. :D

Hazel, hope u had a great w/end too.

Jac, lucky u!

Joanne, thx for sharing ur experience. Pls don't hesitate to leave any comments for me, +ve or -ve. And I'll take ur advice into consideration. Thx!

Chin Nee, yeah, Joanne always has vy good parenting tips. ;)

Jacelyn, training pants are waterproof pants. I think can get from dept stores or bb shops. If it's the cheap type, u'd need to put in a pc of napkin. I've seen the more exp type online which has hi absorbency but doesn't prevent the child from feeling the moisture.

Jazz, I wanna test if he's ready or not. Well, I've got maid to help clean up and wash the extra wet pants mah. :D

Siew Ting, thx!

Mich, *kaching* *kaching* :)

Sue, u got put plastic sheet/mat or not?

Shireen, after a week of training, he seemed to be able to hold his pee longer edi. But accidents still happen, which is normal, I know.

Sharine, poor lil En En. But maybe will need some discipline if she's doing it on purpose when she can edi tell. Hope she gives her co-op again soon.

Sounds like you are making good progress. You've got to have a good sense of humor to be successful at potty training!
