New Bed

The kids have been sleeping in the same room as us since they were born. As XY's already 7 years old, we thought she should have her own room. After looking around (not actively, though) for many many months, we bought the 5 in 1 Multi Option bed, from the SlumberKIDS range (Slumberland). Price = RM1,600 including 2 mattresses. It's a super single bed (3½ feet) with a pull-out bed (3 feet) at the bottom, which can be raised up to the same level as the super single bed.

Although she likes (no, loves) double decker beds, we don't want to get it as we're afraid she'd fall down when she wakes up to pee in the middle of the night (still blur blur mah). She's very interested in the ladder. Every time we're at the furniture shop, the kids would definitely check out (read: climb up and down) the double deckers. :-| They like those fancy beds (car design, carriage design, etc) too, but we don't think they are practical. That said, we still got her "approval" before buying this one. She also chose her own bed sheet with comforter set.

~ obviously a girl's bed :D ~

The bed was delivered on the first week of January. We took the opportunity to "kick" didi out of our room so he can keep jie jie company. I'd still have to put him to sleep. When he woke up in the middle of the night, he'd be crying for me. End up, I'll have to bring him back to my room to sleep. It was disrupting jie jie's sleep so after awhile, I asked jie jie to sleep on her own. She managed to do so, although reluctantly, but she woke up very early in the morning. When she was sick in the third week of January, she slept in our room. And since then, we put that project on hold till the school holidays, when I can train them to sleep in their own room without worrying about them not having enough sleep on a school day.

Now that the 1-week break is over, how did it go? Total disaster, total waste of time. Sigh... they're now sleeping in our room again. To cut the story short, I think didi's still very attached to me. There was a lot of crying during the week. And it got worse as the days passed. Maybe I'm not persevering enough but I've tried for the whole week. No point insisting on it when everyone's not getting a good sleep. And we're thinking, when the kids are in their teens, they'd automatically want their own space. So might as well let them stick to us now. :-)

But I still want to train them to be a little more independent, especially didi. Now the new strategy is to let them sleep on a separate bed in our room. So far so good, although not fuss-free. At least he doesn't have to "smell" me to sleep. I just need to lie next to him, on the mattress on the floor (he's on the bed). The next target is to get him to sleep without me. When oh when will that day come? However, nap time in the afternoons is still the same as before -- sleeping together on the same bed. Coz he said jie jie is in school, so I have to sleep with him. And I don't have the heart to say "No". hehehe

MeRy, I oso dunno y it's called 5 in 1. But it can be used in 3 positions. 1) super single bed 2) a super single and a single bed (when take out the pull-out bed) 3) extra large bed (when put the raised up pull-out next to the super single)

I loved double decker bed when I was a kid, and my parents did get me one... it gave me a feeling that I was in a tree house, with my own territory wihout other intruders! I studied, played and even eat up there... Huhuhu!

I have been sleeping with my kids every night since no.2 was borned. We slept on a double latex matresses on the floor. No point of me having to wake in the middle of the night to attend to their cries.
I tried to train my no.1 to sleep on her own, but failed big time everytime we went overseas. And end up she was crying everytime when I wasn't by her side, nap time and night time.
I actually enjoy the feelings of sleeping together with my kids. I know one day they will grow bigger and we will not be able to do that anymore.

It's a good progress that Didi sleeps on his own bed now. When he is ready he will move out from your room. :)

Does he have any fav toy? Maybe you put all his fav stuff on his bed and slowly distant yourself from him keep telling him you are only outside the room and will come back to check on him till he falls asleep.

Hehehe never mindlah....sometimes I find that I'm forcing my kids to grow up too quickly like sleeping on their own. One day soon enough, they will be the ones kicking ME out of THEIR room! so enjoy it while we all still can :):)

When I was young, my sis and I slept on double-decker beds.. me being the lighter one slept on top... i felt so privileged... hahaha. My kids love double decker too... but we're also afraid they may fall down from bed :-D.

Hmmm... reading your experience got me worried as well... I think I should start training my kids to sleep separate room soon.

I never like double decker bed...to me i feel so troublesome to climb up and down...

Take one step a time to move out the kids to their room, when they ready they will be ok to sleep in different room...now is good already di-di can sleep on seperate bed...may b daytime can let them nap on new bed and the transition period will be better...

My gals have a similar bed. Your girl has good taste. The bedsheet is so pretty, iLove it!

The 5-in-1 bed is cool man...it'll always be there, waiting for the day they're both ready for it. It won't happen overnite, but it definitely will in time to come. Your gal chose a "I love u" bedsheet? Such a sweet gal la.

SP is still stuck with us in the same room like glue but in a separate mattress. We're trying to psycho him to migrate to his own room but from the looks of it, it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Thinking back, he did sleep on his own for 6 whole mths, but it backfired after that.

the bedsheet is more like a teenager set....i thought she would choose disney characters or barbie..hehehehehe

oh well...time will tell la when they (yr 2 kids) to be sleeping on their own.

hugs, hugs for u SM, i know the clinginess n my boys last time n meimei now cosleep with me. Boy 1 is finally on his own now... they grow up overnite, so it may be ur girl's turn soon when she will ask for more independence?! Boy 2 who'll be 6 is only just getting used to sleeping by himself... but prefers to bunk in our room!

i think it's harder for those of us who didn't let our kids as babies sleep on their own, to transition to their own beds n rooms. but the day will come, faster than u think, do hang in there, i understand ur difficulties on one hand, n also on the other hand, what u said they won't want to hang on to us like this when they're older.

still, i think u r making progress with Didi sleeping on his own bed. Jiejie's new bed n bedding looks v comfy... perhaps u can try n encourage her w a lil reward, or maybe u have tried that already, if she'll sleep in there n wake up/stay in her room till the alarm goes off? doesn't work w my younger boy tho', but i've heard it works w some kids. guess that when she was unwell, she was not ready for the change, n just wanted more sayang2.

Mummy Gwen, his fav toy is ME. hehehe I've tried using his fav soft toy, something he brot everywhere he went (in the hse), but I'm still his #1. I shld be happy, rite? :D

June, try furniture shops that sell Slumberland beds. I think they'd hv it.

Rachel, she edi has a Powerpuff Girls and Winnie the Pooh bed sheets. As far as I know, those cartoon ones don't come with the comforter. So I asked her to choose from the normal brands (kids range).

bp, if we give her the ultimatum, I think she can do it. But pity her loh, coz she may feel like an outcast, esp if didi's sleeping in our room. At the moment, we'll put that proj on hold. :)

I've been training my boy to sleep on his own mattress, erm... i think about a year if not mistaken.

I started it out with him sleeping with me and then will move him to the mattress after that.

After sometime, he got used to sleep on his own mattress. Even though there are times he would climb back to my bed in the middle of the night.

And now, he would prefer and able/automatically sleep on his own in his own mattress already. Though there are times he wanted to sleep with me and also asked me to hug him to sleep...so, how not to say no huh? :P

Well, i think it's a good way to start training them not to sleep with us this way and then slowly introduce them the room plan later... ;)

Nice bed! I know it's tough training them to sleep on their own, I've been through it and I was warned by those who had done it before never to give in when they come knocking at your door in the middle of the night. When we first started with Nyn, she kept coming to our room in the middle of the night and I broke the rule, I took her in.

I think jie jie can do it. Every time when she managed to sleep through the night on her own, praise her. I did this with Nyn. She's fine now.

However, I agree with your step by step method and I think it'll work.

I like the new bed.. very good for guests room ler.

I'm still sleeping with the girls too.. and I won't have the heart for them to sleep in another room unless we move to a gated community.

i also have the same bed, meant for AMber and I thought it'll be good to have an extension propped up when she has friends staying over. Guess what ? we moved in to our new house and that bed ended up in the guest room instead. She slept in the cot with us, at our room. One year on.. the slumberland bed came to our room, now she's sleeping next to us, same height as my bed.. and she can roll to my space so easily. Haih.. kids.. they always win.
